This drug works by blocking the action of certain natural substances in your body, such as epinephrine, on the heart and blood vessels. This effect lowers your heart rate, blood pressure, and strain on your heart. Carvedilol belongs to a class of drugs known as alpha and beta blockers.
Do not stop taking carvedilol without talking to your doctor. If you suddenly stop taking carvedilolyou may experience serious heart problems such as severe chest pain, a heart attack, or an irregular heartbeat. Your doctor will probably want to decrease your dose gradually over 1 to 2 weeks.
Too much potassium can lead to erratic heart rhythm and kidney failure. If you are taking a betablocker, your health care provider may recommend that you limit your consumption of bananas and other high potassium foods including papaya, tomato, avocado and kale.
Effects of carvedilol (blood pressure lowering, reduction in exercise-induced heart rate) are usually seen within 30-60 minutes of administration.
