Description

Bon-One Tab 0.5mcg 40’s

Bon-One Tab 0.5mcg 40’s is used for Hypocalcemia, Osteodystrophy in patients with chronic renal failure, Secondary hyperparathyroidism and other conditions. Bon-One Tab 0.5mcg 40’s contains Alfacalcidol as an active ingredient. Bon-One Tab 0.5mcg 40’s works by converting to the active metabolite of vitamin D. Alfacalcidol is widely used in the treatment of osteoporosis, its mechanism of action in bone is not fully understood.

Alfacalcidol stimulates intestinal calcium (Ca) absorption, increases urinary Ca excretion and serum Ca levels, and suppresses parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion. The patient taking this medication must be cautious in cases of arteriosclerosis (blocking of the arteries due to plaque), calcification (deposition of calcium) of pulmonary (lung) tissue, renal (kidney) impairment or stones.

The patient must regularly check plasma calcium and phosphate as a precaution. Alfacalcidol is an analogue of vitamin D used for supplementation in humans and as a poultry feed additive. Alfacalcidol has a weaker impact on calcium metabolism and parathyroid hormone levels than calcitriol, however alfacalcidol has significant effects on the immune system.

It is considered to be a more useful form of vitamin D supplementation. It is the most commonly prescribed vitamin D metabolite for patients with end stage renal disease. Alfacalcidol is an active vitamin D3 metabolite, and therefore does not require the second hydroxylation step in the kidney.

Uses

This medicine is used for the treatment of renal osteodystrophy (a bone disorder in patients with kidney impairment). This medication is also indicated in hypoparathyroidism (decreased function of the parathyroid gland) and hyperparathyroidism (increased function of the parathyroid gland with bone disease).

Side Effects

The patient taking this medication may experience nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, headache, rash, and raised concentration of calcium and phosphate in plasma and urine.

When Not to Use

This medication is contraindicated in cases of hypercalcemia (high levels of calcium in the blood) and metastatic calcification (deposition of calcium in normal body tissues).
