Basoquin Tablets 150mg 600’s is an aminoquinoline used for the therapy of malaria. Amodiaquine has been linked to severe cases of acute hepatitis which can be fatal, for which reason it is recommended for use only as treatment and not for prophylaxis against malaria.

Amodiaquine (ADQ) is a medication used to treat malaria, including Plasmodium falciparum malaria when uncomplicated. It is recommended to be given with artesunate to reduce the risk of resistance. Due to the risk of rare but serious side effects, it is not generally recommended to prevent malaria.

Amodiaquine was first made in 1948. It is on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines, the safest and most effective medicines needed in a health system. Amodiaquine has become an important drug in combination therapy for malaria treatment in Africa. It is often used in combination with artesunate as a by-mouth artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) for uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria. Amodiaquine has also been found to work against chloroquine-resistant P. falciparum strains of malaria.

Uses

When Not To Use

Amodiaquine’s use as a prophylaxis causes an unacceptably large risk of Agranulocytosis as well as liver toxicities and is therefore not recommended.

Pregnancy

The risk cannot be eliminated, therefore make sure to consult your physician before making use of this medication.

Lactation

This medication should not be taken by mothers who are breastfeeding.

Alcohol

Avoid drinking alcohol while you take this medication.

Driving

Avoid driving while taking this medication since it could impair your ability to drive.
